Home Renovation Timelines for your Kitchen, Bathroom, Guest Room and the Finishing Touches

How long will a home renovation take?  Start preparing now to be ready for the holidays!

Home renovation timelines for your kitchen, bathroom, guest room and the finishing touches - start planning now for your holiday home improvement projects - Interiors by The Sewing Room

I know, I know… it’s still summer (though the air is a bit more brisk these days), and kids are JUST heading back to school, but if you’re going to embark on any home renovations to impress your holiday guests, it’s time to start your planning!
Especially if you’re considering a remodel of one of the key areas of your home – the kitchen or a bathroom.  Even a guest room may take longer than you think – unless you have a solid plan in place.
Here are the timeline estimates that we give our clients for the most requested areas  to  complete in time for the holidays.

Kitchen: The Hub of the Home

  • Planning & Design = 4-8 weeks (the fun part!)
  • Collecting Bids, Hiring a Contractor & Getting Permits if needed = 4 weeks (we can help shorten this time – and reduce headaches – by providing you with our resource list of trusted contractors)
  • Construction = 6-12 weeks (depending on the extent of the remodel, this could take even longer, and you may want to consider holding off on construction until after the holidays if time is getting tight)
  • Putting on Your Finishing Touches (or a little buffer time in case one part of the process takes a little longer than expected) = 1-2 weeks

Total Time = 15 – 26 weeks. ~ 3 1/2 – 6 months up to 9 months, depending on just how much of a remodel you’re looking for

Bathroom:  A great investment for resell & your own enjoyment

  • Planning & Design = 4-6 weeks
  • Collecting Bids & Hiring Contractors = 4 weeks
  • Construction = 6-8 weeks (similar to kitchens, if you’re planning to expand your bathroom, or move plumbing & electrical, this could take longer, and you may want to get your plans ready to start after the holidays)
  • Buffer time:  1-2 weeks

Total Time = 15 – 20 weeks. ~ 3 1/2 – 4 1/2 months

Guest Room:  Give your guests a welcoming place to stay

  • Planning & Design = 3-5 weeks
  • Finding the right contractor(s) & getting on their schedule = 2 weeks
  • Renovations = 2-4 weeks (A fresh coat of paint, and new bedding can really make a difference in giving your guests a treat when they stay with you)
  • Shopping for all the finishing touches = 2-4 weeks (If you’d like to add custom window treatments or bedding, see timeline below)

Total Time = 9 – 15 weeks. ~ 2 – 3 1/2 months

Custom Window Treatments:  Complete your home’s decor

(similar timeline for bedding, drapes, and blinds)

  • Planning & Design = 1-2 weeks
  • Creating your Custom Design = 2-6 weeks (depending on how complicated the design & how quickly the fabric arrives)
  • Installation = 1 week

Total Time = 4 – 8 weeks

Hopefully this gives you the information you need to make a decision of when to start your planning & design for your next renovation project.  Please keep in mind that renovation schedules can vary widely dependent on timely decisions, in stock materials, hiring reliable contractors and the size of the renovation (we can help make sure none of these potential delays happen to your project!).  It’s always a good idea to start planning early, and allow some extra buffer time, so you don’t have ‘Wet Paint’ signs up when your guests arrive!

Tips from the Pros: How to Paint Perfect Stripes on a Wall

Alternative Title… ‘How to use painter’s tape, so you don’t get paint bleeding underneath and so you end up with a perfect line every time!’

Today’s tip is definitely a game-changer for anyone who prefers to DIY the painting in their home.  We’ve been so excited since learning about this tip from the professional painters we’ve worked with, that we had to try it ourselves and share it with you!

How to Paint Stripes on a Wall

Our client came to us wanting a fun place for her laundry.  She’d saved a bunch of ideas she liked on her Pinterest board, but wasn’t sure how to pull it all together to create her dream room.  So our designers came up with a plan based on what inspired the homeowner and suggested that her laundry room would be the perfect place to add stripes.  Take a look at the final result and the tips & tutorial below!

How to Paint Stripes on a Wall

How to Paint Stripes on a WallHow to Paint Stripes Like the Pros

Just like any renovation project there’s some planning and prep work involved.  Here, we’ll assume you’re all ready to go with these planning steps:

  • Choose your stripe direction, Horizontal Stripes (which can make the room appear bigger) or Vertical Stripes (which tend to make the ceiling appear higher).
  • Decide your stripe widths.  Do you want skinny stripes or wide stripes?  Do you want them all the same width or varying widths like our designers did here?
  • Choose your two paint colors.  Here we helped the homeowner choose fun and high contrast colors in white and blue tones, but I’ve also seen an amazing finished result using a background flat paint color with a high gloss in the same color to make matte / glossy stripes for a more subtle look.

And we’re going to assume you’ve taken care of the prep work:

  • Purchase your two paint colors (plus the typical painting supplies)
  • Have your tape measure, painters / masking tape and step stool or ladder on hand.
  • Prep the space – clear as much as possible from the room, protect anything still in the room plus floors and trim work.
  • Apply at least one primer coat if you’re painting brand new drywall or painting over a dark color.

Okay, now we’re ready!

Step 1:  Paint Your Base Coat (lighter color)

Make sure to get a great base coat in your lighter color.  If it takes 2 coats for full coverage, go for it.  This will end up being your final full coat of the lighter color, so make sure it’s finished to your perfection standards!  Let this dry overnight (if possible), or at least as long as the paint manufacturer recommends.

Step 2:  Measure and Mark Your Walls for the Stripes

Here’s where your planning information will come in!  Measure out your desired stripe widths – starting in a corner that’s the least visible.  In case there’s a little difference in where the stripes land once you get all the way around the room, you won’t notice the difference if it’s in a hidden corner.

Divide out your wall by the number of stripes (or stripe width) and mark your walls all the way around.  Use a level and straight edge to mark your stripes lightly in pencil all the way around the room.

Now tape out your stripes with painter’s tape, making sure to place the tape just outside of your pencil lines so you paint over those.

How to Paint Perfect Stripes on a WallStep 3:  Here’s the Big Tip!

Paint over your taped line in the base color first.  This way, you’ve sealed the tape edge, and any of the inevitable paint bleeding will be in the base color so you won’t see it in the end!  Let that paint dry at least the minimum recommended by the manufacturer (you’ll be ready for a break by now anyway).

How to paint stripes on a wallStep 4:  Paint your stripe color

Paint as many coats of the stripe color needed for good coverage and let dry per the manufacturer’s recommendations.

How to Paint Stripes on a Wall like the ProsStep 5:  Remove Tape & Voila!

Pull off your painter’s tape at an angle and you’ll have perfectly straight stripes with no color bleeding.  Amazing!

How to paint stripes on a wall like a professional

Our designer helped our client find some adorable large ceiling pendants, and added lots of functionality to her room with shelves over the washer & dryer, key hooks and a beadboard backed area for coats and bags to get the final result!  We love it, and she’s enjoyed the space much more than her stark white laundry room before.

How to Mix Patterns with Decorative Pillows

We love coming up with new color and pattern combos!  Whether you’re pattern mixing a bunch of throw pillows for your sofa or bed, or looking to pull patterns together throughout your room, we’ve compiled a few ideas.  You could add a pattern to your drapes, and use the other two as pillows on your bed.  Whatever your style, we can help you make it happen!

Pattern Mixing Decorative Pillows

Pattern Through Texture:

For those who like to play it safe but still have a little bit of flair, stick to a solid color (on a contrasting color sofa or chair, of course) and incorporate multiple different textures in the same color family.

Neutral Colored Patterns with a Pop of Color:

Feeling a little more brave?  Keep the neutral colors with a classic tone on tone approach and add a fun pop of really bright color! How to Mix Patterns with Decorative Pillows

Same Color Family, Mixed Patterns:

This pattern mix is along the same lines as the previous, staying in the same color family tones it down, but a bright color in simple geometric prints adds the perfect amount of punch.

For the Bold and Fearless:

Go all out!  My favorite is mixing animal prints in anywhere I can.  There’s no rule saying you have to stick with certain color families, just go with what speaks to you!  Keeping all other elements in a room simple through solid colors will keep this pattern mix from getting too out of hand.   Dramatic Pattern Mix - Interiors by The Sewing Room - check out our blog post for tons of ways these pillows can mix and matchLooking for more pattern mixing ideas?  We think you’ll love our Peppy Pillows post! Top 10 NeoCon 2015 Favorites

NeoCon 2015 Recap of Favorites - Interiors by The Sewing Room

As an interior designer, one of my favorite events every year is NeoCon!  At the (giant) Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago, it’s an amazing 3 day trade show of all the newest fabrics, furnishings, fixtures and finishes set in gorgeous showrooms.  Besides seeing the latest and greatest in residential and commercial design, it’s also an excellent opportunity to rub elbows with other like-minded people in the design community!

This year, we slowed down just enough to snap a few pics of our favorites, and have rounded up a photo-list of our top 10!

In no particular order:

Clarke & Clarke Merengue, Delano - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Coordinating Fabrics – Clarke & Clarke – Merengue & Delano

This brightly-colored, quirky zig-zag fabric with a linen background really caught my eye.  The mixed media styles with fringe, coordinating with the beautiful striped fabric with a two toned background would make a statement in anyone’s room.  It’s available in the bright pinks / orange or blue / green combo shown above as well as a more subtle neutral combo or aqua / coral.

Schumacher Eugenie Tassel Fringe - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Fringe – Schumacher Eugenie Tassel Fringe

Maybe it was all the great color options, or imagining this cute fringe around a pillow, but the Eugenie Tassel Fringe was my favorite!  Seeing all the great trim options made me ready to create new pillows, drapes, bedding, the list goes on.  Anyone interested?!

Hickory Bistro Bench - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Idea – Hickory Bistro Made to Measure Bench

I love the idea of adding this sectional banquet to your kitchen or breakfast nook.  Furniture is often simpler to add than built ins, it’s not permanent (if you’re the type to reinvent your style often), and you can move it with you in case you fall in love with it but are relocating!  Such a great way to add a cozy nook to your room.

Kravet Rugs - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Flooring – Kravet Rugs

This rug is quite possibly the softest thing I’ve ever touched.  If you are looking for a rug beside your bed or in your bathroom (or really anywhere you’re likely to walk without shoes – to get the full softness effect), you need look no futher!  Available in a range of colors and sizes, this was by far my favorite floor material of NeoCon.

Favorite Pillow Fabric - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Pillow Fabric

I didn’t get the details on this pillow, but spotted the fun & colorful pattern from across the showroom.  I’d add a coordinating fabric on the backside so you can change up the design anytime the mood strikes (similar to these Peppy Pillows we featured previously)  If you’re interested we’ll be glad to seek out the source, just let us know!

O'Hara Anemone Coffee Table - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Occasional Tables – O’Hara Anemone Coffee & Side Table

So, this one may not be everyone’s style, but wouldn’t it be amazing to see this in someone’s contemporary-styled home?!  Amongst many showrooms of contemporary furniture, this piece stood out to me.  I had to reach out an touch it to make sure it wasn’t just a painted effect, but it really is raised hand-finished copper cylinders as it appears.   Maybe not the most practical, but it sure gives guests something to talk about!

Pom Pom Pillow Trim - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Pom Pom

Surprisingly, these weren’t the only Pom Poms we saw at NeoCon, but this was my favorite!  Love the color combo of the pink & red, and think a couple of these pillows would look perfect on the Hickory Bistro Bench above or on a relaxing window seat.

Donghia Fiona Side Chair - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Dining Chair – Donghia Fiona Side Chair

These beautifully upholstered dining chairs with dainty curved legs are a designer’s dream!  The attention to detail with matching welts and shimmering fabric wrapped over the top of the chair back is incredible.  I’d love to design a room around these chairs.  Oh, and they’re extremely comfortable, too!

Triple Pillow Trim - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Unexpected Detail – Pillows with Triple Trim

We found these in the middle of a commercial flooring showroom, but got excited about the detail.  A simple pop of contrasting color trims out these solid wool pillows.  We could replicate this detail in lots of fabric types, but I wouldn’t add too much pattern or you’ll lose the simple detail.

Dine & Design with Candace Olson - Interiors by The Sewing Room NeoCon 2015 Favorites

Favorite Event – Dine & Design lunch with Candace Olson

Last, but certainly not least, getting to meet Candance Olson, HGTV designer from her show Divine Design, was quite the experience.  I’d never met an HGTV celebrity before, and it was interesting to hear about her career, watch her go table to table and talk with all the designers while a camera crew photographed her every move, and get my own chance to introduce myself, have a book signed and a couple photos snapped.  I had several questions ready to ask, but didn’t get a chance as the lunch was quick, but fun.  (I’m on the left (Dorothy) and Interiors by the Sewing Room owner (Michelle) is on the right)

So there you have it, my top 10 NeoCon 2015 favorites.  It was tough to narrow to just 10, I definitely had a lot more photos I could share.

We’ve been noticing so many tropical foliage and bird prints on outdoor fabrics and cushions these days. This trend is the inspiration for this mood board showing tropical birds and foliage used in small amounts as accents on pillows, art, cushions, and rugs to freshen up your outdoor or semi-outdoor space!

I think these prints add a bit of whimsy and fun to an interior. Mix in some natural fiber poufs or rugs for a true tropical feeling.

8 Updates That You Must Make to Your Bachelor Pad

Guys, we’re talking to you today.  And we want to be perfectly honest.  Your bachelor pad may be scaring people away.

Consider this, you’ve spent hours scoping out the beautiful lady across the bar or in the office next door, and you’ve finally worked up enough courage to ask her out on a date.  The date goes well, awesome!  But then you’re embarrassed to take her back to your apartment.  Even if it was tidied up, you know (and we know) she’d still be scared off.

We’re here to help!  Here are the 8 updates you must make to your bachelor pad so you and your guests will feel the most comfortable.  And, no, we’re not talking about which color bean bag chair matches your favorite sports team color the best, or just how big of a TV can you fit on your living room wall.  We’re talking about ideas for the mature single guy; the staple items a man should have in his home that are timeless and appealing.

8 – A place to eat besides your couch

Dining tables come in all styles, sizes, finishes, and budgets.  Figure out how much room you have for a table (we recommend about 3 feet from the table to the wall or other obstructions to make sure it’s comfortable for everyone while seated).  How may people will you have over for meals – is it mostly just you with the occasional guest (table for two!), or do you have your kids over sometimes and want them to feel welcome at your place with have all the comforts of home they’re used to (table for 4 or more?).  If you don’t already have a dining table or at least a knack for entertaining, you likely won’t be needing anything too large, but if that’s your thing, go for it!

alias-adjustable-bistro-tableIf you’re lucky, your place may already have a kitchen island for bar height seating.  Great!  Pull up a few bar stools and, *Instant Dining Area* (just make sure your stools are the right height, counters are often built in one of several standard heights – check out our post Choosing the Right Bar Stool Height for Your Counters).

compact-modern-kitchen-with-eat-in-island

7 – While we’re talking about eating, you need dishes, glasses and silverware

Frank Dinnerware from CB2I hope you’ve graduated from the red solo cups, 3 mismatched plates from goodwill and whatever plastic silverware you can find leftover from the drive-thru by now and at least own a few wine glasses and real forks.  If not, it’s time.  You don’t need anything fancy, basic white plates, bowls, mugs; a set of matching glasses (wine glasses, too) and full sets of silverware will do the trick.   Stick with plain white so it’s easier to find a replacement if one gets broken.

Frank Dinnerware from CB2

IKEA, CB2, or even Target have the basics that won’t break the bank, but also won’t send your *new friend* running when it’s time to serve breakfast and juice in the morning.  Aim for 6-8 place settings, just in case you happen to have a group over for dinner.

6 – A Bar

Okay, now you have some glasses, maybe some bar ware and a few decent bottles of liquor.  You need a place to keep it all.  Invest in a sturdy piece of furniture (you don’t want a rowdy night with friends to end in your rickety bar cart getting nudged and all your glasses and bottles crashing to the floor).  Think outside just a built-in wet bar (though those are great, too), but consider a sideboard or a freestanding bar cabinet.

Parisan Brass-Topped Bar - Restoration HardwarePlease – Please don’t fill an entire wall with your collection of empty Jagger bottles circa 2001-2015, or your 67 shot glasses from every bar you’ve been to on vacation.  Display only what you use regularly and like.  It should be a reflection of your personal style and tastes as well as a functional piece of furniture.

Antique-Bar-Cabinet-Furniture5 – You need Art on your walls

Maybe you spend most of your time at home watching the game on your 60″ TV, but if the rest of your walls are bare, your place is seriously lacking in style.

Now, you don’t need to have a curated gallery of pictures of your family or original works of art, but if you still have your college posters taped to the wall, please take those down!

Make sure your art is large enough to appropriately fill the wall (don’t just hang a single 5×7 photograph on a large wall), and, most importantly, hang art that reflects your style.  Do you love to travel?  Hang enlarged photos from your trip, or find images of places you’d love to go someday!  Do you like modern art?  There are excellent resources to find prints or original art on any budget (for more art ideas, see 4 New Ways to Use Art as a Design Statement in Your Home).

Bicycle Art Room - Interiors by The Sewing Room4 – Lighting Options

Lighting can do wondrous things to the way you feel in your home.  If you have the right lighting plan, you can flip a switch for a bright work light, change it up for a romantic dining experience, and dim it down for a great moving-watching experience!  Correct lighting can improve your mood, and make you look better.  Now, maybe you don’t plan to do widely varying activities in every room in your house, or maybe you don’t have the budget for a ton of lighting schemes.  But a couple of key lights can really make a difference.

  • Reading lamps by the bed – while most bedrooms have an overhead light or two, the switches are not often next to the bed.  Turning on a bedside lamp and the overhead light off gives a sub-conscious signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down for bed, and can lead to a better night’s sleep.  (It also feels more romantic – if that’s what you’re going for!)

Masculine Bedroom Lighting

  • Plenty of bright lighting in areas you do work.  If you have a home office or desk area, make sure there’s enough lighting there so you aren’t straining your eyes to see.  Also, your kitchen needs plenty of lighting to make sure you can see everything you’re cutting and cooking.
  • Softer lighting for dining and relaxation areas.  There’s a reason most traditional dining rooms have a light above the table and restaurants typcially dim the lights just before dinner service, you want enough lighting for seeing the food and eating, but having that fixture on a dimmer switch can help you completely change the ambiance depending on who your dinner guests are.

3 – A mirror with good lighting

One more area that needs to have the lights addressed is a place for you (and your guests) to make sure you’re presentable to go in public.  Add a mirror near the front door with a light source above to check your clothes and hair on your way out the door.   You will make sure you’re always looking your best when you leave the house, and your lady friends will definitely appreciate this when they come over.

Mike's Masculine Entryway - Apartment Therapy2 – Bedroom Furniture

If you aren’t a recent college graduate, you need to have your mattress up off the floor.  Also, make sure you have a place to put away your clothes.  Though you will likely only have a few guests visit your bedroom, often those are the most important guests.  You want your place to be a peaceful place that reflects your style and shows that you are an adult.

Start with a bed, not just a metal bed frame.  It’s great if it has a headboard, or you can add art above the bed if you’d prefer that over a headboard.  A night stand on each side of the bed (which is a great place to put those reading lamps we talked about earlier), at least somewhere to put your phone at night.  And last, a dresser or chest of drawers to put away your clothes.  Of course you can add more furnishings if space & budget allows, but start with the basics.

Simple Masculine Bedroom1 – Bedding

Your comfort, and your guests comfort starts with good bedding.  At the minimum you should have a set of white sheets (the best quality for your budget), 2 pillows for you, 2 pillows for a potential guest, and a comforter.  Bonus points if you have a second set of sheets, a down comforter, a duvet cover and decorative pillows, but those are up to you, your style and your budget.

If you’ve just ended a long-term relationship, that’s a good time to invest in new bedding as well.  No need to be reminded of the past every night when you go to bed and every morning when you wake up.  A crisp, fresh, clean set of bedding can really set you on the right foot for the day ahead.

Comfortable Bedding

We hope these ideas will help you update your bachelor pad, whatever your style.  Our goal is to make you and your guests to feel relaxed and at home in your space.

If you’re still having trouble with where to begin, want some ideas on how to pull it all together, or are looking for someone else to do it for you, we’re here to help!  Call or email our designers at Interiors by The Sewing Room today!

Runway to Room: Interior Design Inspired by Floral Print Fashion

Spring has sprung and flowers are starting to bloom. Today’s mood board is inspired by a hot spring fashion trend – abstract floral prints! I love fashion just as much as I love interior design, and in the design world, interior design trends in textiles typically follow fashion trends. I love this trend because floral fabrics have become more than just your grandma’s go to, and they’re not just for little girls any more either! Lots of fun bold patterns and colors in more abstract modern patterns make this a really easy trend to incorporate into any room – especially this spring and summer.

Interior Inspiration From Your Wardrobe - Interiors by The Sewing Room

For this mood board I was inspired by an image of runway models rocking this trend with bold colors and black accents.   I interpreted it into a room scheme by using an abstract floral fabric as a base and finding some more subtle (in pattern – not color) coordinating fabrics to pop the colors in the floral fabric. I also used a bold stripe – I think the mix of floral and stripes was made for each other! The black wallcovering with ruffled stripes would be perfect on an accent wall for a really dramatic look. If black is a little too bold for you, don’t worry, it comes in white too! Don’t want to use the floral fabric for your window treatments? That’s OK, use it for pillows or seat cushions – it will still pack a punch and liven up your sofa, chairs, or bed.

Don’t forget to accessorize your room just like you would any outfit! Here I show a fun pendant light fixture with just the right amount of sparkle and a really interesting geometric mirror. Some bright fresh artwork would also do the trick! Use your neutral furniture as a base and invest in some new pillows, window treatments, and accessories to add a pop of color to your home this spring!

3 Bright Color Palettes for Your Home

Spring is back in the Midwest!  Discussions around our office this time of year often lead to a readiness to spruce up our wardrobes with bright and fun colors.  It can be just as exciting to brighten up your home (and very needed this time of year!).

Today I wanted to show you some ways to use bold and bright colors effectively in your home with some inspiring images and bright color palettes.

Bright Color Palette - Plum & Teal Living Room - Interiors by The Sewing Room

Our first Bright Color Palette shown two ways includes a rich punchy plum, terrific turquoise and sassy green on a neutral background.  I love the impact of the bright seating in both of the images, and the rug and bedspread pull together all of these bright colors.  You could achieve the same effect with a painting, adding accessories, or even an arrangement of fresh cut flowers, if you’re wanting to test out the palette without long-term commitment!

Bright Color Palette - Plum & Teal Bedoom - Interiors by The Sewing Room

Aren’t the ottomans at the end of the bed a great addition?!

Bright Color Palette - Pops of Color Living Room - Interiors by The Sewing Room

This bright living room has an abundance of light pouring through the windows and reflected on all the bright white surfaces.  Even the artwork is light and subtle.  But by adding some colorful accent pillows and accessories, the beige sofa and room really come to life.  This room just screams Spring!

Bright Color Palette - Pops of Color Bedroom - Interiors by The Sewing Room

In a similar bright color palette, the yellow patterned wallcovering and the comforter on this bed in a modern springy floral pattern bring lots of great color to an otherwise neutral bedroom.  If I woke up in such a bright and colorful room everyday, it would definitely start my day off on a happy note!

Bright Color Palette - Colorful Living Room - Interiors by The Sewing Room

Our third bright color palette includes some very bright colors!  This living space looks like it could be a sunporch on a tropical island.  With a glass of iced tea and a good book I could sit and enjoy the warm breezes and bright colors for hours.

In our final image, these fun tropical colors are brought into an open kitchen and dining area with a modernized traditional style.  Classic cabinetry and sleek white counters provide the perfect background for pops of bright teal, blue and oranges.  With the perfect amount of pattern mixing, this fun twist with classic style would be a dream to live in.

Bright Color Palette - Colorful Kitchen - Interiors by The Sewing Room

How do you like to use bright colors in your home?  Are you brave enough for a bold and bright sofa?  Do you play with brightly patterned window coverings or pillows?  Or do you prefer to change it up with accessories and flowers to brighten up for the season?

With spring just around the corner, I was feeling green and chose to take inspiration from a Martha O’hara interior.  She used various shades of green through accent pieces, pillows (which we can replicate here at the Sewing Room) and plants.

Accessories are an instant and (can be) inexpensive way to change up your space for any season or mood, and having a good neutral base makes it a synch!  Not a fan of green?  No problem!  Yellow or blue would be fun colors to play with for spring – and don’t be afraid to mix it up!

Another hot trend I’ve incorporated is mixing in vintage items – like that dreamy vintage rug from Etsy shown in the mood board.  The weather is becoming perfect for hunting local vintage markets or antique stores to find that special timeless addition to any interior.

Shop for the look:

1.  Turkish Vintage Rug

2.  Cartoccio Vase or get the look for less: littala Alvar Aalto Vase or Fused glass flower vase

3, 4 & 5  Duralee Tassel and fabrics from Clarke and Clarke Brooklyn & JF Fabrics Purcel – contact Interiors by the Sewing Room for details on creating a custom window treatment or pillows using these beautiful designs.

6. Delilah Table Lamp or get the look for less:  Bullet Glass Table Lamp or Envy Ovo Table Lamp
